Lesson plan on Martha Hughes Cannon, the first female state senator in U.S. history.

Students analyze maps and primary documents and share stories of the Westward Expansion relating to gaining women’s suffrage.

After learning about Susan B. Anthony, students will create a coin mobile. On the back of each coin, they will write the actions that identify her as an agent for change, as well as a word to describes her.

Students will learn about the purpose and message of Declaration of Independence, question and discover if women had rights in Early America and analyze and compare the Declaration of Sentiments and its message and purpose.

In this lesson, students will explore how or if music reflects society and furthers the goals of activism and protest.

Students will examine documents to determine if the justice system fair and Constitutional in its treatment of the National Women’s Party picketers

Students will explore the life of Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin by critically reading primary and secondary sources to determine her worldview and perspective.

Students will read the assigned biography and quotes to explore connections between activism and the power of words and ideas.

The 19th Amendment did not come without a prolonged fight. Students will examine rationale for opposing suffrage through the lens of class, immigration status and race.

Students will examine The Declaration of Sentiments from the perspective of its call for women’s economic equality.
